Is tuition free in Finland for Sri Lankan students?
Finnish citizens and EU/EEA students study for free. Non-EU international students (including Sri Lankans) pay tuition fees ranging from €6,000–€18,000 per year. However, most universities simultaneously offer 50% or 100% tuition scholarship waivers to their strongest admits — making it effectively free for high-achieving students. How much does it really cost to study in Finland as a Sri Lankan student?
After scholarship waivers, realistic annual out-of-pocket costs for a Master’s student are €8,000–€16,000 (roughly LKR 3–6 million) including tuition balance and living expenses. Can I work while studying in Finland?
Yes. International students on a valid Finnish student residence permit can work up to 25 hours/week during semester terms and full-time during scheduled breaks (summer, Christmas). Average wages start at €12–14/hour in retail and hospitality, rising to €16–22/hour in tech-related roles. Most students earn €800–1,400/month part-time.
What is the post-study residence permit in Finland and how does it work?
After completing your degree in Finland, you can apply for an extended residence permit for job-seeking — currently valid for up to 2 years. This allows you to stay in Finland and search for employment without needing a job offer first. Once employed in a skilled role, you apply for a continuous (employee) residence permit, which is the foundation for permanent residency after 4 years of total legal residence.
How long does the Finnish student residence permit (visa) process take?
Applications are submitted online through the Enter Finland portal and reviewed by Finnish Immigration (Migri). Processing from Sri Lanka typically takes 4–8 weeks. The Finnish Embassy in Colombo handles biometrics. We recommend submitting your residence permit application at least 3 months before your programme start date. Do I need IELTS? What score do I need?
Yes, English proficiency is required. IELTS Academic is most widely accepted. Typical requirements: Bachelor’s — IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall; Master’s — 6.5–7.0 overall. Some programmes accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT (min 92), or Cambridge Advanced (CAE). A few universities accept English-medium academic transcripts as proof. How do I prove sufficient funds for a Finnish student residence permit?
Finland’s Immigration Service (Migri) requires you to demonstrate €560/month (≈ €6,720/year) in available funds. You can show this through: a personal bank statement, a scholarship award letter, a parental sponsor declaration, or a combination. Unlike Canada, there is no fixed “GIC” requirement — a bank statement showing the funds is typically sufficient. We’ll help you structure this documentation properly.
