New Zealand universities and the New Zealand government offer meaningful funding for high-achieving international students. These are the most accessible awards for Sri Lankan applicants.
All degree levels
Most New Zealand universities offer international excellence scholarships worth NZD $5,000–$20,000 per year for high-achieving applicants. The University of Auckland, Otago, Victoria, and Canterbury all run competitive scholarship rounds alongside admissions.
Postgraduate
Offered to citizens of Commonwealth countries, including Sri Lanka. Covers full tuition, a living allowance, and return airfares for postgraduate study at New Zealand universities. Administered by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
All levels
Auckland awards merit-based scholarships to outstanding international students across all faculties. Applicants are automatically considered upon applying for admission — no separate form required.
Undergraduate
Wellington awards significant tuition reductions to high-achieving international undergraduates and postgraduates. Automatically considered at admission: competitively awarded based on academic results.
Master's / PhD
Otago offers full tuition waivers plus a living stipend for international students pursuing research-based Master’s and PhD programmes. Strong emphasis on academic achievement and research potential.
STEM / Sustainability
New Zealand participates in bilateral scholarship agreements with several Asian nations. Additional awards are available through Education New Zealand (ENZ) and individual university foundations for students in STEM and sustainability fields.
Other countries give you a degree. New Zealand gives you a government-backed pathway from Student Visa → Post-Study Work Visa → Skilled Migrant Visa → Permanent Residence → New Zealand Citizenship. Here’s how the pipeline works:
Complete your degree programme (3 years for Bachelor’s, 1–1.5 years for Master’s, 3–4 years for PhD)
Live and work freely in New Zealand after graduation: open work rights with no employer restrictions
Secure a skilled role in a high-demand occupation and apply for residence: many graduate roles qualify directly
After meeting residency requirements — apply for New Zealand Permanent Residence, then citizenship after 5 years
For Bachelor’s programmes: completed A/Levels (local or London) with competitive results, and IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall (with no band below 5.5).
For Master’s programmes: a recognised Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in a relevant field, and IELTS 6.5 overall (with no band below 6.0).
Competitive programmes at the University of Auckland and Otago typically require IELTS 7.0+ and a stronger academic record.
Yes. International students on a valid New Zealand Student Visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official university holidays.
New Zealand’s minimum wage is NZD $23.15/hour, one of the highest in the world: making part-time work a meaningful contribution toward living costs.
Realistic annual costs for an international student range from NZD $38,000–$55,000 (roughly LKR 8–12 million) including tuition and living expenses. Cities like Dunedin, Hamilton, and Palmerston North are meaningfully cheaper than Auckland. Scholarships and part-time earnings can significantly reduce the net cost.
The Post-Study Work Visa allows international graduates of New Zealand universities to remain in New Zealand and work for any employer in any role after graduation. The visa is granted for up to 3 years for graduates who studied in Auckland, and up to 3 years for those who studied outside Auckland. It is the first step toward a Skilled Migrant Visa and permanent residence.
New Zealand Student Visa applications are submitted online via Immigration New Zealand’s online portal. Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks once all documents are submitted. Biometrics are collected at a VFS Global centre in Colombo. We recommend applying at least 3 months before your course start date. Our average processing time for clients in 2026 was under 6 weeks.
Yes, English proficiency is required. IELTS Academic is the most widely accepted test. Typical requirements: Bachelor’s – IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall; Master’s — 6.5–7.0 overall. Many New Zealand universities also accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT (minimum 80–90 depending on the institution), and Cambridge Advanced (CAE). Some institutions accept Sri Lankan English-medium A/Level transcripts as supporting evidence.
Immigration New Zealand requires you to show funds covering your tuition fees plus living costs of at least NZD $15,000 per year (approximately NZD $1,250/month). These funds must be demonstrated through a bank statement, scholarship award letter, or parental sponsor declaration or a combination. Unlike some countries, there is no fixed government investment requirement. We’ll help you structure and present this evidence correctly.
New Zealand consistently ranks among the world’s top 5 most peaceful nations (Global Peace Index). University cities are safe with very low violent crime rates. Universities provide dedicated international student services, health and counselling support, and active student associations. Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington all have established Sri Lankan communities, and New Zealand’s famously welcoming Kiwi culture makes integration genuinely easy.
